I was in Asda yesterday trying to get through as quick as possible, like I always do when I am anywhere near shops, and Emma said “if your radio career goes horribly wrong, there’s always Asda FM”

And that got me thinking, what exactly is the point of Asda FM?

For those of you who are unaware of what I’m speaking about, Asda FM is a radio station that can only be heard over the P.A. system in Asda stores across the country. And it is a proper radio station, with proper presenters, proper text in competitions and proper adverts… But I’m not entirely sure of it’s purpose.

Every time I’m in Spar I hear the “No repeat weekday” on Spar FM where they promise to only play the same song once in the space of the day. But I’m only in Spar for 5 minutes at most a day (unless Emma is having one of her indecisive days). They could theoretically play the same 3 songs in a row and I wouldn’t know any better.

So on that basis, the presenters must be there for the staff rather than the customer. Surely no one goes to Asda to hear their favourite presenter or text in a competition. But then surely staff aren’t allowed to use their mobiles while working, so who exactly sends a text to Asda FM?

Also, the in store announcement system always interrupts the presenter anyway, so what is the point?

Ironically I bet Asda FM has more listeners at anyone one time than a lot of local commercial stations.

I’m not having a go, in fact I’m genuinely intrigued. And who knows, maybe one day you will hear my voice “across the Asda stores of the UK, where we currently have a half price sale on Custard Creams”.
