  • The tale of the Crow Chicks

Apologies if I sound like I’m turning into Bill Odie here, but I spotted these on my dads flickr profile and felt it was worth posting here.

These two crow chicks were blown out their nest in a gale back home, and are now living in the grass below the nest, with the parents unable to do anything.  Will they survive?

One of the parents keeping guard. Watching out for cats, seagulls and twitchers.

A few days later, they look to be doing okay.

Will keep you posted on this real life soap opera. No wait sorry, that is too Bill Oddie-ish. Back to what I am good at doing best, complaining about Jay-Z and things like that.

  • Jay Z, what were you thinking?

Jay Z on stage at Glastonbury

This is old news now, but Jay-Z performed on stage at Glastonbury on Saturday. I’m not really a fan of his. Unlike Noel Gallagher though, it didn’t bother me that he was performing or headlining, I can understand people have different musical tastes and I’m fine with that.

But while watching his Glastonbury set, I did feel Noel maybe had a point. Glastonbury sets need to have something anthemic about them, and Jay-Z’s certainly didn’t.

The next statement has nothing to do with my massive love for Oasis, but Jay-Z tried to be clever with performing Wonderwall at the start of his set, but it didn’t work.  It was a very good idea, but it sounded like a poor karaoke version. If Jay-Z had personalised it a bit better it could have really made an impact. In fact by performing Wonderwall it led to the only anthemic part of his set, where the crowd sang along to the song.

Have a listen yourself, sounds pretty much like a typical Saturday night in the pub.

    Coldplay at the BBC

If you have a 45 minutes to spare in the next few days, you might want to watch this:
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/page/item/b00cfsbf.shtml

It’s a live Coldplay gig from outside the BBC the other day.  The best quote I heard regarding the whole gig was from Richard Bacon on 5 Live that same night who said “I went and watched the gig for a while. It was good, but the stage was right where I normally park my car.”

01.09am on the longest day of the year

1.09am - it’s not quite as light as being at home, but I suppose it will have to do.

  • They’re taking over the world

Aberdeen Seagulls. They are getting bigger, and they are getting less scared of humans and I feel it is only a matter of time before they will be governing us (saying that I have now just realised that a seagull in charge of the country couldn’t do any worse than our current government).

There is one seagull (pictured below) who now lives in our car park at work scaring everyone as they leave their cars. One day he even managed to get in the building. First he hangs around, I predict he’ll then be doing travel news before the end of the summer shortly followed by getting his own weekend show on the station. Much like my progression at work… only no doubt he’ll be more entertaining.

Also, in the current economic crisis, I’m sure the expense of window cleaners, thanks to this seagull, isn’t a welcome cost.

  • Something odd is going on

    Candle Light

I’m sitting here in candle light. Not sure why. I’m not usually in to all that sort of stuff. I’m trying to relax you see. I’m being David the travel bod tomorrow on the breakfast show for the first time in a month or so. I’ll have to get into the swing of waking up very early again.

Problem is I’m not the relaxing type of person. I can never settle. I wish I could put down my laptop, switch off my phone and mute my IPod but it just doesn’t seem to work.  Xavier, our book pundit on the Sunday Showcase has let me borrow a copy Ian Fleming’s short Bond stories in a desperate attempt to get me to start reading books, maybe I should try that to relax.

It’s also not helping that it is still very light outside, even at half 10 at night. Something I’m used to when in Shetland, but not on the mainland.  Rather scary though in a couple of weeks we’ll be at mid summer and it will start getting darker again!

Getting close to mid summer could be a benefit for tomorrow though. At least it will be broad daylight leaving the flat at 5am. Always a help.

    Viva La Vida

I’ve always been a semi fan of Coldplay. A lot of their material I like, a lot I hate. One of the funniest lines from Peep Show ever was “People like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis, you can’t trust people!” However I couldn’t wait to hear Coldplay’s much anticipated and incredibly catchy titled new album “Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends“.

A copy arrived the other day, and on first listen I wasn’t that impressed. I’d already heard the title track and Violet Hill which on first listens I thought were both good songs, but as for the album, I felt it lacked something. I got to the last track and just thought “is that it?”

But I was aware that a lot of songs and albums take time to grow on me, so I put the album on my IPod and had it on rotation all weekend and I think it has finally clicked. Some observations… You need to listen to it from start to finish in the right order before it finally makes sense. For this reason I don’t think it’s very radio friendly, I can’t see how there can be many singles coming off of it. It’s very different to their previous work and I don’t think there are many anthemic tracks on it (no Scientists or Fix You’s).

The album is released on Thursday (randomly, most albums are released on Monday’s). But if you can’t wait till then, you can hear it all on their Myspace page. I would however warn, from past experience, it’s always nice to hear a brand new album in full proper CD quality and not being streamed off a Myspace page. So you may just want to wait till Thursday.

Best song on the album, Lost!

Conclusion. After the first listen I thought it was a bit of let down. After listen number 4 it is finally clicking into place. By listen number 8 it will probably be a stroke of genius.

    Rockness

Rockness - Who Can Beat It? by CapnOats’ on Flickr

Emma and her friends are off to Rockness tomorrow morning to partake in a weekend of live music and camping.

On being asked by one of her friends during the week “do you not wish you were going David?”, the simple answer was “no!”

As much as a like live music, drinking outside and uncooked food from burger vans, it’s the camping the puts me off. I’m a little bit scruffy, but even I couldn’t cope with 3 days of no showers, shared toilets and a lack of electricity.

So Emma and co, I’ll be thinking of you on Sunday morning when I contemplate getting out of bed to go and have a shower in my nice, warm, dry, clean (ish) flat.

We had one of my favourite sessions on the show this week, Mia Riddle, a folk singer song writer all the way from Brooklyn. She’s fantastic. And she’s only signed in Japan, she really should be signed here… if only I owned a record company.

I got a copy of her new album which is going to be out in about July, very nice. Look out for it.

Here’s my favourite song from the session, City Song:
