the ramblings of a bored man

Quite apt that Original 106’s Shetland correspondent (that’s me by the way) should be doing the travel reports on the breakfast show the morning that Shetland features in the news twice.
Firstly it has been claimed that Shetland is home to the fattest people in Britain. Not so apt then that Original 106’s Shetland correspondent is probably Shetlands thinnest man (I weigh in at an impressive 8 and a half stone by the way). I was having a think of people I know from Shetland who are obese and I can’t think of anyone. I’m sure that report can’t be right.
Secondly, Shetland has been the sunniest place in the UK this month. Not so apt then that Original 106’s Shetland correspondent hasn’t been on the island at all in August. In fact I’ve only been on the island twice this year (and both times the weather was questionable). I can’t help but think this report is slightly inaccurate as you’ve got to bear in mind that in the summer the sun rises in Shetland quite a bit before most other places.
Oh and by the way, the station don’t employ me because I’m their Shetland correspondent, they get that bit for for free.

So how are you spending your bank holiday tomorrow? Maybe you’ll sleep all day? Maybe you’ll go shopping, mow the lawn, have a BBQ or generally enjoy the 18 degrees Celsius weather forecast that Aberdeen has.
I on the other hand will be enjoying the biggest gig of my radio career to date. Bigger than my debut on Radio Shetland 6 years ago. Bigger than my first solo show on commercial radio 4 months ago. They’ve given me mid mornings… for one day only.
And yes it’s a bank holiday, but that could be quite big. Lots of people in their cars on the way to the shops. Lots of people driving around wasting fuel on a nice run to the country. I think I’ll be running on adrenalin for the 4 hours.
So if you’ve got nothing to do tomorrow, it is a bank holiday after all, 10am-2pm, 106.8/106.3FM across the North East of Scotland or online at www.originalfm.com, give it a listen!
Mean while, here’s a video of Iain Lee showing you how to present a radio show. Loving the subtle digs to Virgin Radio and their music rotation.

The way I see it, there are two types of people in this world.
Those who have ordered pizza on line… and those who haven’t.
Some people say that You Tube is the greatest website in the world, other argue it’s the BBC’s mass array of pages on line… I disagree. By far it’s the Domino’s Pizza on line ordering service.
I was introduced to it by my colleague Andrew Learmonth. One night on the Sunday Showcase (one of Original 106, and in fact radio’s, finest programmes) we were a bit peckish so we ordered a pizza… on line… and the rest, as they say, was history.
You log on, you look at pictures of pizzas, you decide what you like, you put in a 12 digit code that some what resembles your credit card number, and next thing you know (20 minutes later) there’s a pizza at your front door.
Genius. Never need to cook again. Although I now need another job to suplement my ever decreasing bank balance.
